The UGC Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree Regulations, 2022 continue to provide the core framework for Ph.D. programmes. Part-time Ph.D. is permitted subject to institutional conditions, while Ph.D. through distance or online mode is not permitted. Candidates should always verify the latest university notification before applying.
Candidates with a relevant postgraduate qualification may be eligible, subject to the marks, subject alignment and other conditions prescribed by the concerned HEI.
The UGC 2022 framework also provides an eligibility route for certain candidates with a qualifying four-year / eight-semester bachelor's degree, subject to the prescribed marks and university requirements.
Applicable UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, JRF, GATE or other national-level qualifications may form part of the admission route according to the university's current notification and applicable rules.

Part-time Ph.D. programmes are permitted under the UGC 2022 framework when the prescribed conditions are fulfilled. The HEI may require a No Objection Certificate from the employer confirming that the candidate can pursue the programme, devote sufficient time to research and be relieved for coursework where required.
Part-time does not mean online or distance Ph.D. Candidates remain subject to coursework, research supervision, progress review, attendance or residency requirements where prescribed, and the complete doctoral regulations of the concerned HEI.
